Cosmo Mag-Tool of the Oppressor or Bringing out our Sexy Sides?

Check out this article analyzing a Cosmo Mag from 1991 and one from 2012. The article's author, Peter Lappin, is a "home sewing fanatic" and author of the blog Male Pattern Boldness. Peter's point is that the Cosmo 2012 describes women's fashion in much more sexual language than the Cosmo or 1991 which focuses more on words about love. His article does a really great job of questioning whether the emphasis on sexiness is empowering or demeaning to women. As someone who loves sex enough to study it and talk about it on multiple podcasts (thanks to Sally McGraw, one of my co-hosts on the Strong, Sexy & Stylish Podcast, for letting me know about this article!) you all know I am a sex positive person. But that doesn't mean I don't question Cosmo magazine and the importance our society places on women looking sexy. Who is all the sexiness for? Is it to improve the confidence and self-esteem of the readers or make them feel like they need to have to have 50 New Sex Tricks up their sleeves to be an attractive and desirable person?

Read the article and tell us what you all think! Women, do you feel pressured to be sexy in ways that don't feel empowering to you? Straight or bi guys, do you like Cosmo's sex advice? Would you want a girlfriend to read it and use it on you? Any lesbians/bi-girls want to give their opinions on what makes a sexy lady?

P.S. I can't wait to check out more of Male Pattern Boldness! Sewing and sex politics all in one blog? I'm there!

Meet the Naked Anthropologist

Have you heard about Laura Agustin? She addresses sex worker issues, often posting historical documents to support her position that "rescuing" or "rehabilitating" sex workers doesn't work since sex workers often choose their work, enjoy or value it and don't want to be rescued. She also asserts that "human trafficking" as the media portrays it basically doesn't exist. Her perspective comes across on her blog as interesting, always well researched and one we don't often hear in the media frenzy to make a dramatic story. Whether you agree with her standpoint or think she is way off base you should check out her writing.

The Beautiful Cervix Project

Hey Sex is Fun Listeners, you need to see the Beautiful Cervix Project! This is a series of photos of one woman's cervix through a monthly cycle.

This 25 year old woman has never given birth and has no history of STIs. Each photo was taken at approximately 10:00 pm every day starting the first day of her menstrual cycle. For the duration of this project, she used condoms as her birth control method so as not to introduce semenal fluid into the photoshoot. She did not use tampons or mooncups during her menstruation either.

If you've never see a cervix before, now's the time! Be warned, these are real internal body pictures and some do include blood as they illustrate her menstrual cycle.

Post Baby Sex and The Sexy Mamas

Hey SiF Listeners,

Welcome to the first of what will be weekly posts from me, Laura Rad. Check here every Thursday for a post about what is on my mind at that moment (sex), amazing links I want to share (about sex) or (sexual) mysteries to ponder.

Today I am putting the final touches on my new class, Sexual Reconnect: Yes you can have a post-baby sex life! As I construct the class, one thing keeps coming up over and over; the importance of affectionate, supportive touch. Sometimes in life we are to exhausted, emotional or overwhelmed to rally for sex. In these moments holding hands with your partner, rubbing their back for 5 minutes or giving a hug can make the difference between feeling supported and feeling disconnected. Take some time to hold the hand of someone you love today. Awww. So sweet.

When you get your hand back you need to use it to go check out The Sexy Mamas! This is a sex positive blog for moms and thank goodness it exists. As a sex positive mama myself I have an incredibly hard time finding resources dealing with parenthood in a way that resonates with me. The Sexy Mamas have a great balance between topics on parenthood, topics on sex and topics that interest the thinker in all of us. Check them out!

See you next Thursday.
